Building My Own Website: A Story in 47 Broken Links

October 12, 2026

Anyone who tells you building your own website is easy has never asked me where my homepage went. I know exactly where it went. It went to a page that says "coming soon" and has remained there for moral support.

I have spent full hours adjusting the space between two words. Not choosing the words, mind you. Just the space between them. And then I looked at the whole thing on a phone, where it was somehow a completely different website, in another language, wearing someone else's shoes.

Milestones of my website journey

  • Day one: "This will take a weekend."
  • Day nine: "Why does the menu work on my screen and nowhere else on earth?"
  • Day twenty: Learned what a cache is, and now I say it in conversation so people think I'm technical.
  • Day thirty: Deleted a whole section because it was arguing with another section. Told nobody. Slept fine.

Somewhere in all of that, though, it started to click. Small wins add up. A picture that finally sits the right way. A form that really does send an email to a real person. A phone version that looks like the desktop version's well-behaved sibling instead of its chaotic cousin. It still isn't finished, but I've stopped apologizing for it, which feels like progress.

If you're in the middle of this right now and quietly considering giving up and making a flyer instead, that is a normal stop on the route. Have some coffee. Then keep going.
